When it comes to getting rid of those godforsaken stubborn pounds, many fitness enthusiasts turn to dietary supplements to give their fat loss journey an extra kick. Yohimbine and alpha yohimbine (also known as rauwolscine) have gained popularity in recent years for their potential to enhance fat burning. In this post, we’ll dive deep into the realm of these supplements, exploring their effects on fat loss and other benefits they may offer. Let the battle of the fat burners begin!

If you are in a hurry, here are some examples of both types, that I recommend!

  1. Fat Loss: The Ultimate Showdown

1.1 Yohimbine: The Fat-Burning Maverick

Yohimbine, derived from the bark of the Pausinystalia yohimbe tree, has been widely studied for its potential to promote fat loss. It primarily works by blocking alpha-2 adrenergic receptors, which leads to increased release of norepinephrine, a hormone that stimulates fat breakdown.

Research suggests that yohimbine can aid in fat loss, especially in stubborn areas like the abdomen and hips (Ostojic, 2006). Its been on supplement shelves for at least as long as I have been working out (twenty-some-odd years), but is starting to get more recognition as of late. However, it’s important as always to note that individual results may vary, and yohimbine is most effective when combined with regular exercise and a balanced diet.

1.2 Alpha Yohimbine: The Contender

Alpha yohimbine, also known as rauwolscine, is a plant very similar to yohimbine and boasts similar fat-burning properties. While both compounds have comparable mechanisms of action, the key difference lies in their potency. Alpha yohimbine is considered to be more potent than yohimbine, meaning smaller doses can yield the same effects.

  1. Additional Benefits: Beyond Fat Loss

2.1 Libido Boost and Sexual Function

Yohimbine, in addition to its fat-burning properties, has been traditionally used as an aphrodisiac. It is still often marketing as such by many companies. Research suggests that yohimbine may improve erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the genital area (Ernst et al., 1998). Honestly this was one of the first things I noticed when I first took years ago. It was definitely a pleasant surprise to say the least! So I can vouch for this actually being an effect of it. It’s important to consult with a healthcare professional for appropriate usage and dosage recommendations for this purpose.

2.2 Pre-workout

Both yohimbine and alpha yohimbine have shown potential in enhancing cognitive function and mood. These compounds are believed to increase dopamine levels in the brain, leading to improved focus, motivation, and overall mental well-being (Callaway et al., 1996). For me, this is far more noticeable with alpha, which is why it is often seen in pre-workout supplements. Another noticeable effect from alpha for me is the opening up of the vessels in your chest, which make breathing easier. That is also pretty helpful in a workout sense.

  1. Safety Considerations: Proceed with Caution

3.1 Yohimbine: Side Effects and Precautions

While yohimbine can be an effective supplement for fat loss, it’s essential to be aware of potential side effects. Common side effects may include increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, anxiety, and gastrointestinal distress (Tam et al., 2001). One HUGE thing I have experienced with yohimbine is extreme restlessness and my legs sweating profusely. Now this is obviously dose dependent, but I definitely would recommend taking this early in the day. I have unfortunately stayed up all night, I mean that literally, a few times because I took too much or too late. Individuals with pre-existing medical conditions, such as heart disease or high blood pressure, should exercise caution and consult a healthcare professional before using yohimbine.

3.2 Alpha Yohimbine: Safety Concerns

Alpha yohimbine, being more potent than yohimbine, carries similar safety concerns. It’s important to start with smaller doses to assess individual tolerance and gradually increase if necessary. I haven’t noticed the same level of restlessness as yohimbine, but too much will definitely make me feel like complete crap, almost like my blood sugar plummeted all of a sudden. As with any dietary supplement, it’s crucial to prioritize safety and consult with a healthcare professional before use, especially if you have any underlying medical conditions.

  1. Optimal Dosage: Finding the Sweet Spot

When it comes to dosing, individual responses can vary. As a general guideline, a common dosage range for yohimbine is 0.2-0.4 mg/kg of body weight, taken before fasted exercise sessions (Ostojic, 2006). However, it’s crucial to start with a lower dose and assess tolerance before increasing the amount.

For alpha yohimbine, due to its increased potency, a lower dosage range of 0.075-0.15 mg/kg of body weight is recommended (Ostojic, 2006). Again, individual tolerance should be considered, and it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplementation regimen.

One thing I cannot emphasize enough with both of these, is figuring out the dosage that both works for you, and doesn’t have the negative sides on you. Also both come in different forms and every brands potency is different in my experience, so always take that into consideration!!

  1. The Final Verdict

In the battle of the fat-burning supplements, both yohimbine and alpha yohimbine show promise in aiding fat loss. While yohimbine has been extensively studied, alpha yohimbine offers similar effects with smaller doses. However, it’s important to remember that these supplements are not magic bullets and should be used in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet.

I have personally used both and find them to be two of the best individual ingredients for fat loss. Both have a fine line between being super effective and overdoing it. That being said, I like alpha when I’m looking for that extra boost during a workout and regular yohimbine when I want a little something extra for the bedroom! There are a few supplements that combine both ingredients, which can be outstanding!! Both are awesome as fat-burners!!

As with any supplement, it’s crucial to prioritize safety and consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating yohimbine or alpha yohimbine into your regimen. Individual responses can vary, and it’s important to find the optimal dosage that works for you.

Remember, achieving your fitness goals requires dedication, hard work, and a holistic approach. Supplements can complement your efforts, but they are just one piece of the puzzle. Stay consistent, stay motivated, and embrace the journey to a healthier, leaner you!
